Mordant 2015

Inherent in Bell’s art is intensity and a sense of intrusion into the intimate spaces in conversations’. (Esther Dudley, ‘The Meaning of Text as Image’, The International Journal of Visual Design, Volume 6, 2013)

MORDANT (from the French to bite) is a new departure for Bell. Intrigued by the influence that a particular art space and, indeed, the work being show within it, might have upon spoken exchanges, Bell spent a week at the Oriel Davies Gallery listening to and capturing conversations. Transcribing these interactions into letterpress, Bell has created a facsimile of what she heard that can be both read and felt. Wanting to encapsulate the notion that walls somehow absorb the discourses that happen within them, Bell has eschewed the written page to work directly into the plaster.
