On Reading 2014

‘Bell’s love of books is at the heart of her subversion of their text…..They are precious to her and cutting up preciousness is thrilling, naughty and subversive and a more visceral than intellectual act.’

Esther Dudley, ‘The Meaning of Text as Image’ (The International Journal of Visual Design, Volume 6, 2013)

With this collection of work, Bell is mainly concerned with personal memory of interior space – classrooms, bedrooms and playrooms – memory told through the books she has read. Such books have been ransacked - stripped of their covers, spines and endpapers - reduced, cut through with a fine scalpel. Made with fly leaves from classic orange Penguin Books, ‘On Reading, 2014’, depicts a child’s first encounter with literature – one of incomprehension, wonder and delight.
